A Trip to Shillong and Cherrapunji

It was in the month of January 2014 that we went for a trip to Shillong & Cherrapunji. The Journey started in Guwahati and it took 2 and half hours to reach Shillong. NH 40 connects Guwahati to Shillong. The 98 kilometers of road from Guwahati to Shillong was pleasant. The Journey through the Khasi hills and Umsaw forest was splendid.

Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya. It is situated at a height of 1500 m above the sea level. Shillong is also known as the 'Scotland of East India'.

On the way, we halted at Bara Pani. Bara Pani is also known as Umiam Lake. The Lake is popular for Water Sports and adventure facilities that it offers. Water cycling and boating are a few of the facilities available at the lake.

After that we visited the Elephant Falls, the spot is always crowded with tourists. It is situated about 12kms away from the city and is a short diversion from the road to Cherrapunji. Stairs has been conveniently made to visit and to view the falls closely. The Fall is very clean and two sub falls of it.  Elephant falls gets its name from a rock that was in the shape of an elephant. The beauty of Elephant falls lies in the gradual descend. There are a few shops selling nice local stuff including handicrafts at the entrance. This place is worth a visit as it has very serene and pure feeling to it. One of the main point in local sight seeing. A must Visit Place.

Elephant Falls
Good tourist point

The next point was The Air force Museum. It is situated on the National Highway and close to elephant falls. It is really well maintained museum with all the history of India Air force. There are few Generic displays like Mig-21, Hunter, Iskara Trainer, Missiles, bombs etc. The museum gives most information about the defence forces of the country.

The Air force museum in Shillong is something that will enhance your knowledge regarding various aspects of India's defence system. There is a Shop for gifts and other items. I did purchase some souvenirs for myself and family.

Our next tourist point was The Shillong Peak, this is the highest point in the state. We have to show our ID and register our vehicle at the gate to enter this point as the area belongs to Indian Air Force. There were already plenty of visitors at this location. Shillong peak is situated about 10 kms away from which the city derives its name. This peak rises to 1960m. It is an excellent outing place on a bright sunny day for the scenic sights. Shillong being a rainy place, dry season is suitable to visit this point. If the weather is not clear there is no point of visiting this tourist spot. We enjoyed the panoramic view of Shillong from the peak using the telescopes. The long Pine trees makes the place very romantic.

After enjoying the beautiful locations of Shillong, we started our journey to Cherrapunjee(Sohra). It is about 52 kms away from Shillong. The road trip to Cherrapunjee was amazing although it was a short distance. We first visited the Mawsmai Cave, these limestone caves are the only caves in Meghalaya that are well lit to enable tourists to enjoy the natural formations. It has a minimum ticket entry. We went inside the cave, the pathway that circulates the cave is a bit long, which is good. Oxygen level may dip inside some of the caves. The whole tour took about an hour.Had a lovely trip to these caves with family.

I will recommend to wear Sports shoes and be prepared for very narrow ways.

Thereafter we headed to Polo Orchid resort, its a nice property nested amongst the mountains. Serenity and calmness is what engulfs you. It was thrilling to see the wondering clouds coming up from the valley and covering the roads which seems a common phenomena there. The property has ample of space for kids to play. The food was good.

The ambience of the restaurant was very good. You can have a clear view of Seven sisters Falls.

We spent a very good time at the Resort enjoying the scenic view of the surroundings.

It was a wonderful weekend getaway to Shillong and Cherrapunjee.

We visited the Resort in the month of February 2017. The Weather was clear and warm. We started off our Journey in the morning, it took nearly an hour to reach the Resort. After reaching there we were amazed to see such a beautiful resort located at the outskirts of Guwahati and you feel closer to nature considering greenery everywhere. There were several other guests in the resort. A musical show also organised.

Lake at Panacea.

Food Corner
The hospitality was very good. Food served is delicious with a mix of various cuisines having more emphasis on ethnic Assamese food. The place is well maintained, away from polluted cities where one can breathe fresh air and enjoy quality time with near and dear ones. Mobile Network is Patchy but manageable.

This was my first visit to Panacea and live it to the expectation. Staff was good always ready to help.

Nevertheless the resort is beautiful and you end up being in the lap of nature in the literal sense.

A Trip to London

In this post I am going to share my experiences in London.

It was in the month of January 2009 when myself and my two colleagues from our department were selected for an onshore outsourcing project training in London, U.K. I was working in a KPO at Bangalore. On the day of the departure we had to reach to the Bangalore International Airport at Devanahalli in the early morning. After reaching at the Airport, we had to go through security checks, collected Boarding Passes and were awaiting for our flight announcement, after sometime we were instructed to board on to the flight. Then after few minutes the Flight took off.

After 4 hours and 15 minutes journey we reached Dubai International Airport. After landing at the Airport I was astonished by the Architecture and modern amenities at the Airport. Along with my colleagues we visited the Duty free shops and was amazed to see various brands displaying their collections. We halted at the Airport for 3 hours.

After 3 hours we were instructed to board at another flight which will be landed at the Heathrow Airport, London. After 7 hours we landed at the Heathrow Airport. The outside temperature in London was -4°. After waiting for few minutes outside the Airport we rode on a cab and went to Hornchurch where our accommodation was decided.

The next morning we went to Liverpool Street Station and from there we boarded on a local train to Leaden hall Street to attend our training. In U.K. the working hours between 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. are typically considered to be Standard Business hours. Common business is done from Monday to Friday.

In the weekends we used to visit the Sight-seeing spots in U.K.

Along with my colleagues we visited the Madame tussauds, it is a wax museum. It is one of the major tourist attractions in London. Inside the museum the waxworks of famous celebrities and stars are displayed.

After that we visited the Lords Stadium located in St. John's wood, London It is a cricket venue named after its founder, Thomas Lord. It is owned by Marylebone Cricket Club. The visit to Lord's Cricket Stadium was awesome.

Lord's Cricket Venue

We then left for East Ham, the place is a multi cultural area. There are many stores and restaurants specializing in ethnic tastes. We visited one of the Indian restaurants and had our lunch. We purchased some Indian Grocery items.

In the next weekend we decided to visit Greenwich. Greenwich is home to some great London attractions such as the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory with the Prime Meridian line.

Greenwich

We also visited Piccadilly Circus, Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace.

The view of the Tower Bridge, London was very beautiful. After few weeks we were shifted to a well equipped 7-Bedroom House at Rayleigh 67 High Street.

During the stay at London we have witnessed snowfall. The houses, streets were covered with snow and it was very slippery.

                                                                     Snowfall at Rayleigh.

At Romford train station.
We also went to Southend on Sea, there are many stores and shops. The place is good for Shopping.

                                                               At Southend-on sea, Essex

Bus Stop near Primark Southend on sea, Essex

During the office holidays, we visited the Hyde Park, Canary wharf. Talking about Canary Wharf, it is the Financial Powerhouse of Europe with numerous financial firms. The area is enormous. There are plenty of bars, pubs, restaurants and cafes to visit. From the Architectural point of view it is Impressive.

The financial firms at Canary Wharf.

During the stay at London, myself and my colleagues visited Wimbledon Lawn tennis Museum . Wimbledon is a district of south-west London.

The day started as three of us had planned. Initially, we went to Liverpool Street Station from Rayleigh by train after reaching Liverpool Street Underground Station we purchased tickets to Wimbledon. We had to walk for few minutes to reach the Lawn Tennis Club. It took nearly an hour to reach Wimbledon.

The tour to Wimbledon was enjoyable. We had a tour around all the courts, including centre. The tour was well presented and informative. We also got to visit the museum and this was fantastic. The museum is good and has some interactive exhibits and a 3D show. It is worth spending there over an hour listening to electronic tour guides as you can learn a lot about the history of Tennis. There is also an onsite shop with Wimbledon merchandise. The shop had plenty of souvenirs. The tour was approximately 1.5 hours, visiting two main courts  (Centre and No.1) as well as one of the outside courts, the mound, the press area etc. Would highly recommend for all Tennis fans and Wimbledon fans. A Classic Memorabilia.

In the last weekend of our training, we visited London Eye. It is one of the London's top attractions. The staff were very friendly and it was a very enjoyable experience. A full rotation on the London eye takes about 30 minutes. We were lucky that the weather was not foggy, it was a clear day. We have seen the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. A great experience to do whilst in London on a clear day. The 30 minute trip was brilliant especially as the weather was good so views were long distance. The tickets were pricey but worth it. The queues are long in Sunny days. A must Visit Place for families and tourists.

The London Eye

The training has come to an end in the month of June 2009. We packed our luggage's and the next day we were dropped at Heathrow Airport and then we boarded on the flight and headed back to Bangalore.

The training and the tour ends with beautiful memories.

Thank you.
